Research Methods in Pharmacology: Associations and Societies

The Society was founded in 1931, in Oxford, by a group of around 20 pharmacologists. They were brought together on the initiative of J.A. Gunn, by a letter signed by JA Gunn, HH Dale , and WE Dixon, who proposed the formation of a pharmacological club. The group met in Wadham College on the evening of Friday 3 July 1931, the day before the meeting of the Physiological Society.

He BAP is a learned society and registered charity. It promotes research and education in psychopharmacology and related areas, and brings together people in academia, health services, and industry. Formed in 1974, it is the largest such national association in Europe, and the second largest in the world.

The European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (EACPT) is a learned society in the field of clinical pharmacology. It is the leading society in Europe serving the European and global clinical pharmacology and therapeutics community. It has its origins in a working party in the early 1980s under the auspices of the World Health Organisation (WHO-Europe). Subsequently, a committee was created in 1993 chaired by Folke Sjöqvist[1] with the remit to prepare the first congress of EACPT, held in Paris in 1995.[2]

The genesis of pharmacology in India dates back to the beginning of 20th Century when Col.Ram Nath Chopra took over the reins in 1921 as the first Professor of Pharmacology at the School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta. Col. Chopra who is rightly regarded as the doyen of pharmacology initiated several research investigations to study the merits and demerits of indigenous drugs used in the country since ancient times.
