In order to develop a complete understanding of the deviation of communication abilities from normal development it is necessary to learn about normal course of developmental. Knowledge about the areas of development will be imparted. Skill to analyze diverted and delayed language as per its cause will be developed. A complete understanding of language disorder syndromes will be imparted.

Learning Objectives

The focus of this course is to develop a complete understanding of the deviation of communication abilities from normal development. At the end of this course student will be enable:

• Discuss the different stages of normal development from pre-natal period till death.

• Describe the theoretical approaches and techniques for the betterment of physical, mental and emotional disorders and related problems.

• Identify the causes, signs and symptoms, assessment and treatment of different neurological, genetic and language disorders.

Course Outline

• Introduction to Developmental Pediatrics

• Theories of early development

NORMAL DEVELOPMENT FROM BIRTH TO FIVE YEARS.

• Physical development- Gross and Fine motor.

• Reflex development + Practical

• Perceptual, Cognitive, Social, emotional, Language and Self-care and Play development

• Practical (e.g. perceptual testing).

• Pregnancy, Normal Prenatal, natal and Post natal period and possible complications.

• Brain damage and its origin in children.

• Overview of childhood diseases. Neurological diseases in children (meningitis, encephalitis, etc.) and other conditions (hypothyroidism etc.) which may affect the child's development or lead to permanent disability.

• Cerebral Palsy(CP); causes, signs, assessment , treatment

• Mental Retardation: causes, signs, Assessment, Treatment

• Developmental Delay and Global Developmental Delay; Assessment, Interventions, treatment
