Course Objectives

Learning Outcomes:

Student will be able to

 Identify the etiologies and clinical features of speech and language pathologies and the role of the speech-language pathologist as a member of the decision-making team.

 Discuss approaches to decision making when the individual who lacks decision making capacity including the application and limitations of advance directives and decision-making for children.

 Apply different formal and informal assessment tools regarding speech and language disorders to make diagnosis and appropriate treatment plans on the basis of those assessments.

 Apply knowledge of Articulation, Fluency, Voice and resonance, including respiration and phonation in clinical practice be it in assessment or intervention.

 Problem solve around assessment and intervention for Receptive and Expressive language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) disorders including hearing disorders using formal and informal assessment tools.

 Design SMART intervention goals for Swallowing (oral, pharyngeal, esophageal, and related functions, including oral function for feeding; orofacial myofunction) following thorough assessment.

 Correlate cognitive aspects of communication (attention, memory, sequencing, problem-solving, executive functioning) with client’s base line performances to device effective treatment planning.

 Value Social aspects of communication in clinical application (including challenging behavior, ineffective social skills, lack of communication opportunities) and understand its impact on quality of life.

 Collaborate with families and multidisciplinary teams in the selection and use of communication modalities (including oral, manual, augmentative, and alternative communication techniques as assistive technologies)
