Course Description:

This course is designed to present a basic knowledge of speech and language disorders prevailing in multi-cultural population. Through text, lectures and a variety of multi-media sources, students will be introduced to the concept of language acquisition in multicultural influenced population and certain important guidelines for assessment of a child coming in with a culturally diverse background. The course of study involves: concepts of monolingualism, bilingualism and multilingualism, language acquisition stages incorporated with language proficiency model, basic concepts related to culture and language, different languages and dialects spoken in Pakistan, factors influencing the language acquisition, differentiation between language disorder and language difference and assessment guidelines, protocols to prevent biases during assessment.
