The ISB has a broad view of the science and application of biomechanics, believing that biomechanics has a major role in the study of all biological systems, from the level of the whole organism down to molecular size scales.

Biomechanics represents the broad interplay between mechanics and biological systems. The American Society of Biomechanics (ASB) was founded in 1977 to encourage and foster the exchange of information and ideas among biomechanists.

ISBS members have written some of the most widely used university textbooks as well as practitioner books and manuals. Hundreds of refereed journal articles, as well as widely read practical articles in popular journals, have been published by ISBS members. In addition, members have developed new coaching, teaching and training strategies and patented sports, exercise and rehabilitation equipment.
