The study of economic development is one of the newest, most exciting and most challenging branches of the broader disciplines of political economy. Traditional economics is concerned primarily with the efficient, least-cost allocation of scarce productive resources where as Development Economics has an even greater scope. In addition to being concerned with the efficient allocation of existing resources, it must also deal with the economic, social, political and institutional mechanism both public and private, necessary to bring about rapid and large scale improvements in living standards for the masses. The course has been structured within the macro-economic frame work of Pakistan.
The primary aim is to provide students with theoretical knowledge backed up by country experiences. To achieve this ,the course introduces students the major theoretic paradigms and debates on growth and development. It then introduces Pakistan perspective on policy issues and experience relating to agriculture, trade ,industrialization, and international financial flows .
