Course Outline

Course Objective:

  • To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the regulation and maintenance of body fluids, electrolyte balance, and the functioning of the renal system in the human body.

Learning Outcome:

After completing this course students should be able to:

  • Analyze, evaluate, and explain the principles and mechanisms underlying body fluid regulation, electrolyte balance, and renal function, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of their role in maintaining overall physiological homeostasis.

Course Outline:

  • Compartment of body fluid/Measurements
  • General functions of kidney
  • Structure of kidney and nephron
  • Formation of urine
  • Urine concentrating mechanisms
  • Role of kidney
  • Acid-Base balance
  • ADH and its function
  • Micturition
  • Renal function tests and urine analysis
  • Electrolytes (Na, K, Ca, PO4, Mg ) regulation by kidneys
  • Tissue fluid & Oedema
  • Renal failure
