Education System in Pakistan (GE-107): Course outline (GE-107)

Course description

The course provides an overview of Pakistan’s system of education and educational policies designed from independence to the present day to upgrade this system. Besides this, it will enlighten the students about the specific characteristics and issues of different 28 tiers of educational system of Pakistan. The major target of the course is to provide prospective teachers a thorough background of the entire system as well as of the particular level at which s/he intends to teach, especially with reference to English Language Teaching.

Course objectives

On successfully completing this course, the students would be able to:

  • Know historical perspective of education in Pakistan
  • Evaluate language policies
  • Know trends and issues in educational system of Pakistan
  • Know issues about English and its teaching in Pakistan.

  • The Education System of Pakistan: recent developments

Unit-II            English in Pakistan’s Education System

  • Status and Importance of English in Pakistan: the Foreign or Second Language debate.
  • English in Pakistani Politics and Society.

Unit-III           Language policies

  • Language policy in Pakistan
  • Teaching of English as an International language
  • Place of English in the curriculum
  • The Medium of Instruction Dilemma: implications for language planning in higher education.
  • The public private sector divide and English

Unit-IV           Higher Education in ELT

  • Higher Education in Pakistan: Past, present and future
  • HEC’s steps to promote ELT in Pakistan

Unit-V             Teacher Education

  • New Global Developments
  • Teacher Education: Challenges and Possibilities in Pakistan

Teaching-learning strategies

Teaching will be done through lecture method with a combination of tasks/projects and presentations

 

Assessment and Examinations

Assessment will be done as per university/department policy.
