Classical Drama (ENG -205): Course outline (ENG -205)

Course description

This course will acquaint the students with the history of dramatic composition, basic components of drama and its difference from other genres of literature. It will provide an insight into the socio-historic conditions of the Classical and the Elizabethan era and students will be familiarized with the elementary features of the Greek and Elizabethan drama.

Course objectives

The objectives of this course are to:

  • Introduce the students to socio-historic conditions of Classical and Elizabethan theatre
  • Develop understanding that drama is expression of human behaviour and emotions as well as reflect socio-cultural setting of its society

  • Give the students insight into Greek and Elizabethan society by reading the works of prominent dramatists
  • Provide the students an opportunity to show their creativity and artistic ability by directing and composing theatrical performance
  • Analyze the works of Classical and Elizabethan playwrights

Course contents

  1. Unit-I: Greek Drama
    • Origin and purpose of drama
    • Greek and Roman theatre
    • Characteristics of drama particularly tragedy defined by Aristotle
    • Oedipus Rex by Sophocles: Critical analysis

Unit-II: Elizabethan Drama

    • Characteristics of Elizabethan theatre and drama
    • Socio-political scenario of Renaissance/Elizabethan age

Unit-III: Shakespeare as a playwright

    • Hamlet by William Shakespeare : Critical analysis
    • Julius Caesar by Shakespeare
    • Twelfth Night by Shakespeare

Unit-IV: Christopher Marlow

    • Doctor Faustus by Marlow: Critical reading
    • The Jew of Malta by Marlow

Teaching-learning strategies

Teaching will be done through lecture method with a combination of tasks/projects and presentations.
