Communication and Presentation Skills (ENG -3150: Course outline (ENG -315)

Course description

The purpose of this course is to develop students’ oral and written communication proficiency. Although the apparent focus of the course is on oral skills, for example, macro and micro speaking and listening skills, the course will also cover most of the aspects of written communication as well. The course emphasizes the various components of communication in our life from classroom to social and professional interaction. Ranging from informal to formal and academic contacts, the course concentrates on the fluency and accuracy of the students in both oral and written English language. It also aims at sharpening the students’ confidence in using English in academic and professional settings.

Course objectives

The specific objectives of this course are to:

    • Enable the students to comprehend English conversation.
    • Help students use English in formal settings (e.g. classrooms, workplace etc.).
    • Make the students confident using English in real life contexts.
    • Help students improve speaking fluency.
    • Sharpen the students’ academic and written communication skills.

 
    • Familiarise the students with various types of written communications (e.g. emails, formal letters, etc.).
    • Equip students in composing various types of writings/ writing compositions (e.g. short paragraphs, essays, letter to editors, newspaper articles, etc.)
