Oral Medicine for BDS: Home

Oral medicine (sometimes termed dental medicine, oral and maxillofacial medicine or stomatology) is a specialty focused on the mouth and nearby structures. It lies at the interface between medicine and dentistry.

Course Description

Independent department of oral medicine was established in January 2012. Patients with facial pain, mucosal lesions and other oral medicine related disorders are treated here by specialists. Being a teaching institution students and house officers are also trained and equipped with latest and upto date knowledge and skills in the department. The subject of Oral Medicine & Diagnosis is taught in Third Professional year of BDS which includes lectures, tutorials and clinical rotations in clinics of Oral Medicine at Islamic International Dental College. The subject is concerned mainly with diagnosis and treatment planning pertaining to the field of dentistry. A thorough medical and dental history, comprehensive extra and intraoral examination, requesting and interpretation of relevant investigations, followed by accurate diagnosis and developing a logical treatment plan based on the patient’s needs are the main tasks. The goal is to obtain vital information on patient’s medical and oral status, differentiation between normal and pathological or potentially pathological conditions to promote accurate diagnosis and their early management.
