Course description

The course mainly focuses on the nature of literary writing. Students will be introduced to the various classifications of literature according to whether they are fiction or non-fiction and whether they are poetry or prose. Students will also understand the major forms such as the novel, short story or drama, and historical periods or their adherence to certain aesthetic features or expectations (genre).

  • To provide a brief introduction to the study of literature, its various genres, and their characteristics.
  • To acquaint the students with the role of literature in society.
  • To make the students understand how literature reflects the spirit of time.

  • Different forms of drama: Tragedy, Comedy, Verse drama.

  • Novel: its nature and function.

  • Different forms of the novel: Epistolary, picaresque, Stream of Consciousness.
