Vacuum Science & Technology: Home

PHY-8003 (PhD)

Course Description

Vacuum Science & Technology explores the principles and methods for creating and measuring sub-atmospheric pressure environments. The course covers the fundamental gas laws and kinetic theory that govern low-pressure physics. It provides a detailed study of vacuum pump technologies, including roughing, high-vacuum, and ultra-high-vacuum systems. Students will learn about the operation and application of various vacuum gauges for accurate pressure measurement. A significant focus is placed on vacuum system design, construction materials, and leak detection techniques. The curriculum also emphasizes practical applications in industries like semiconductors, materials science, and space simulation. Ultimately, the course equips students with the skills to design, operate, and troubleshoot vacuum systems for research and industrial use.
